Govt to build shelters in flood-prone districts

Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya today said the government will construct shelter centres for flood affected people in each union parishad of 17 flood-prone districts very soon.

“The government will always stay beside the flood affected people … None will suffer for want of food,” he said while addressing a meeting at the Deputy Commissioner (DC) office here.

Maya said food items and cash would be allocated as per the demand of the district administration and the relief distribution programme will be continued till the flood situation gets normal.

The minister also asked the district administration and public representatives to do their best and ensure that no one suffers for want of food.

“The government is monitoring the flood situation carefully… Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is also enquiring about the situation regularly and giving directions to the ministry,” Maya said.

Maya also asked the medical teams to visit the shelter centers in the flood affected areas regularly and to ensure safe drinking water for them.

The government has allocated 6,100 tonnes of rice, Taka over 1.55 crore and 39,000 packets dry foods for distribution among the flood victims in the flood affected districts, he said.

The government also distributed rice among 3.80 lakh flood affected families under Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) programme in Sylhet region, Maya added.

Later, the minister distributed relief among the flood victims in different areas of Phulchhari upazila of the district.
